Assignments for Week 2 - DIAGNOSIS:

Please complete the following tasks BEFORE class:

  1. Read the Users Guide to the Medical Literature: How to Use an Article about a Diagnostic Test.

  2. Read the Diagnostic Cases and Questions.

  3. Read the Article: “Performance of Helical Computed Tomography in Unselected Outpatients with Suspected Pulmonary Embolism.”

  4. Review the Clinical Prediction Rule for Pulmonary Embolism

  5. Consult the Likelihood Ratio Nomogram as needed.

  6. Answer the questions on the Diagnostic Cases and Questions document.

  7. Review the Diagnosis Worksheet 

  8. Be prepared to discuss the article and Clinical Scenario

Please complete the following tasks BEFORE class:

  1. Read the Users' Guide to the Medical Literature  - How to use an Article about Therapy or Prevention

  2. Read the Treatment Scenario "Mary McQ"

  3. Read the two articles:

  4. Review the Therapy Worksheet 

  5. After reading the articles, be prepared to discuss the following questions:

    1. What are the main differences between the methods in the two articles?

    2. Which article do you consider to be more valid?  Why?

    3. How would you design a study, given unlimited resources, to better address Mary McQ's concerns?

    4. Based on the available data, what would you recommend regarding hormone therapy for Mary McQ?
